History

Named after Robert E Lee’s hometown in Virginia, the history of Arlington is rich and complex. The area was first settled in 1840 by European Settlers, a trading post was set up after the first of many battles between these settlers and Native Americans.

Arlington was founded in 1876, continuing to grow, incorporating on April 21, 1884. Situated directly between Fort Worth and Dallas, Arlington hosted visitors travelling between the two city centres.

The city began to grow as the rich soil brought farmers to work the land, as time progressed, schools and hospitals were erected. By 1925 the city's population had grown to about 3,000 people with further growth into the 1940’s.

Post WWII saw Arlington’s biggest growth with the town's population exploding from 7,500 people in 1950 to 90,000 in the 1970’s. During the next few decades, Arlington would see continued growth, and with that growth came entertainment, Six Flags Over Texas Amusement Park opened in 1961, the Washington Senators now known as the Texas Rangers came in 1972, and the Dallas Cowboys came in 2009.

Arlington continues to grow, even being chosen as the building site for the National Medal of Honor Museum, which should be completed by 2024.
